192.168.11.1 Login for Buffalo Routers
Not working? Check the label on the back or bottom of your router.
192.168.11.1 is the address Buffalo has used for years on its AirStation WiFi routers, which is why most searches for it come from Japan, with steady interest from Taiwan and Morocco too. Type it into a browser while connected to the router and you reach the settings screen, where you can rename the network, change the encryption key and update the firmware. This 192.168.11.1 login guide explains which username and password your model expects, why the page sometimes refuses to appear and how to set the router up safely.

Default usernames and passwords
| Brand / model | Username | Password |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo AirStation (models with a setup card) | admin | password (or the value printed on the setup card) |
| Buffalo AirStation (older models without a setup card) | root | (leave blank) |
How to log in
- Find the setup card from the box, or the label on the router; it lists the WiFi name (SSID), the encryption key and the admin login.
- Join the AirStation's WiFi with that key, or connect a cable to a LAN port.
- Open a browser and go to 192.168.11.1.
- Sign in with admin and password, or root with an empty password on older units, unless the card says otherwise.
- Set a new admin password when prompted, then adjust the WiFi settings.
- Apply the changes and reconnect your devices if you changed the key.

Change the default admin password as soon as you're in.
What is 192.168.11.1?
192.168.11.1 is a private address at the start of the 192.168.11.x network. Buffalo chose this less common range on purpose: Japanese homes often have an ISP gateway or optical network unit (ONU) on 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x, and a Buffalo router on its own range can sit behind it without an address clash. The address only works on your home network, and your devices receive neighbouring 192.168.11.x addresses from the router.
Where you'll meet 192.168.11.1
Japan accounts for most of the traffic, because Buffalo is one of the country's most familiar router brands. Taiwan and Morocco also show regular search interest; if your router there answers on this address, the brand and password will be on its label. In Japan, the three addresses to know are:
| Brand | Default address | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Buffalo | 192.168.11.1 | This page |
| NEC Aterm | 192.168.10.1 (aterm.me) | 192.168.10.1 |
| Elecom | 192.168.2.1 | 192.168.2.1 |
The mode switch: why 192.168.11.1 sometimes vanishes
Many AirStation models have a small mode switch on the back that sets the unit as a router or as an access point (AP/bridge); some add an automatic setting. In router mode the AirStation hands out addresses and answers on 192.168.11.1. In AP or bridge mode it becomes just a WiFi extension of your ISP's gateway, receives its IP from that gateway, and 192.168.11.1 stops responding.
If you are in AP mode, open your ISP gateway's list of connected devices, find the Buffalo entry and use its address. Or move the switch to router mode, unplug the power for ten seconds and try 192.168.11.1 again. Only do that if your ISP gateway is in bridge mode; otherwise you create a double router setup.
Find the gateway your device is using
Your device knows which router it is talking to. On Windows, the ipconfig command lists it as Default Gateway. On a Mac, Option-click the menu bar's Wi-Fi symbol to see Router. iPhones show it in the network's (i) screen, and Android phones in the network details. If the answer is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, you are probably on the ISP gateway's WiFi rather than the Buffalo's, or the Buffalo is in AP mode.

Wrong WiFi network
The ISP gateway and the Buffalo often both broadcast WiFi. Pick the network name printed on the Buffalo's setup card.
admin / password doesn't work
If the card shows a different password, use that. If someone changed it, hold the reset button until the lights change to restore the factory settings, then use the card's values. A reset also clears your WiFi changes and any PPPoE login stored in the router.
The page is slow or blank
Type http://192.168.11.1 in full, close VPN apps, and try another browser. A cable connection rules out WiFi problems.
Phone keeps leaving the WiFi
During first setup the router may have no internet yet; switch off mobile data so the phone stays connected.
Change the WiFi name and encryption key
The wireless settings are under Wireless (無線設定 on Japanese screens). Set the SSID and encryption key for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, choose WPA2 or WPA3 personal, and apply. Buffalo routers also have a one-touch button (AOSS/WPS) for pairing devices; it's convenient, but turn WPS off in the settings when you don't need it. Sharing the new network is easier with a printable QR card from our WiFi QR tool.
Keep an AirStation secure
- Replace admin/password, or a blank root password, straight away.
- Check the firmware update menu every few months.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3; switch off any WEP network left from old game consoles.
- Store the setup card somewhere private, as it holds your WiFi key.
Typed 192.168.l1.1?
Look out for 192.168.l1.1 or 192.168.11.l with letters, 192.168.111 with a dot missing, and 192.168.ll.1 typed with two lowercase L's. The IP Typo Fixer untangles all of these.

Frequently asked questions
What is the default Buffalo router password?
Models that come with a setup card use admin as the username and password as the password, unless the card shows something different. Older models without a card use root with no password.
I lost the setup card. Can I still log in?
Yes, provided the admin password is still the factory one: try the defaults above. The WiFi key is usually also on a label on the router. Otherwise, reset the router.
Why does 192.168.11.1 open my ISP's router instead?
It shouldn't; your ISP router uses a different address. Most likely you typed another address from memory, or the Buffalo is in AP mode and the ISP gateway is answering instead.
Can I change the Buffalo's 192.168.11.1 address?
Yes, in the LAN settings. Afterwards, log in with the new address and reconnect any device that had a fixed IP.
How do I reset a Buffalo router?
With the router powered on, hold the reset button until the lights change, then wait a few minutes for it to restart with factory settings.
Does 192.168.11.1 work from outside my home?
No. Only devices on your home network can reach it; from anywhere else the address leads nowhere.
